Cyclone FSI

Dec 9

Adding a cyclone to structure can result in unintended high vibrations if not properly analyzed in advance. Vibration forcing frequencies can come from the equipment itself (motor/pump speeds) and it can come from the flowing fluid. In order to determine the forcing frequency of the flowing fluid, a fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) needs to be completed in a co-simulation between the CFD and FEA software. This project analyzed such a system, with clear points of resonance occurring with certain beam members of the structure. Changes were made to these beams and the re-analysis showed that the structure was no longer in resonance with the fluid forcing frequency.
