A detailed 3D model, with all structural components, most non-structural components, bolts, welds, and the significant mechanical equipment, is used to create a finite element analysis (FEA) model. A structural static strength analysis is performed using ASME Section VIII Div. 2 “Limit Load” technique, which uses the non-linear FEA model. Design loads are applied and evaluated at various inclinations and with consideration to opening/closing loads. The Limit Load study indicates that the new luggage chute is acceptable structurally for the industry design loads. Separately, the hoist wires are found also to be acceptable.
The equipment is currently installed at various airport terminals around the U.S. and operating safely.
The compact design frees up valuable space and facilitates more gentle handling of the luggage than
previous means for transporting excess carry-ons from the jetway to the ground.
